Organise Sowing and Harvesting

Posted by growyourown on February 4, 2007

  1. Set up a Google Calendar.
  2. Create two calendars; one for sowing (green) and one for harvesting (brown).
  3. Enter the information from all your seed packets into the relevant calendar.

By checking the weekly calendar you can see at a glance what needs to be sown and what could be ready to harvest.

Google Calendar

I’ve set mine up to include a calendar for flowers too (orange) and also one that records the details of my allotment (pink), e.g. “Sowed sweet pepper, snowball cauliflower and nicotiana white trumpets.”

The Best Poppy Seeds for Bread

Posted by growyourown on February 3, 2007

It’s widely acknowledged the the best seeds for bread are those from the Hungarian Blue Poppy. I’ve just ordered some for the allotment and can’t wait until they flower. The colour of the flower is quite amazing and I bet the bees will love them. They’re hard to get hold of but you can find the Hungarian Blue Poppy seed on eBay.

Another thing I can’t wait for now is to try out these recipes:

  1. Hungarian Lemon Poppy Seed Cookies
  2. Poppy Seed Spaghettini
  3. Persian Poppy Seed Puffs
  4. Dill & Poppy Seed Soda Bread
